Video walls and visualisation systems

A video wall works not as a set of screens on a wall but as a system: panels, support structure, controller, switching design and calibration. How well they are matched decides whether the image reads as one continuous surface.

The wall configuration follows from the task. The size and number of modules come from the viewing distance and the smallest character that has to stay readable from a workstation. Resolution is chosen so that sources display without scaling: a stretched image on a large diagonal is obvious at a glance. For rooms with strong daylight, brightness headroom is checked separately.

The bezel width between modules remains the most visible parameter. On professional panels it is measured in a few millimetres; on consumer screens the frame eats into the image and breaks the picture apart. Where any seam is unacceptable, LED screens or rear-projection cubes are used instead.

The support structure is designed separately. It carries the weight of the wall, allows each module to be aligned precisely in one plane and gives access to the panels for servicing. A misalignment of one or two millimetres at a joint shows up on a flat colour fill, so alignment is done against test images.

Once installed, the wall is calibrated: panels from the same batch still differ in brightness and colour temperature, and without matching them the wall looks blotchy. Calibration is repeated during scheduled maintenance, because the parameters drift with running hours.

What the system consists of

  • Narrow-bezel professional LCD panels or LED modules
  • Support structure with alignment for every module
  • Video wall controller handling multiple sources
  • Matrix switcher and signal extenders
  • Layout control panel
  • Power supply with redundancy

What the work covers

  • Sizing the wall for viewing distance and content
  • Design of the support structure and cable routes
  • Supply of panels, controller and switching
  • Installation of the structure and modules, alignment of the wall
  • Commissioning, calibration for brightness and colour temperature
  • Layout configuration and staff training
  • Scheduled maintenance with recalibration
