Turnkey situation and command centres
A situation centre is a room where dissimilar data sources are brought onto one display surface, so that the duty shift sees the whole picture and controls it from one desk.
The point of a situation centre is to close the gap between subsystems. Video surveillance, telemetry, mapping, line-of-business systems and video conferencing normally live in separate applications on separate screens. In the centre they are placed onto a shared video wall using predefined layouts, so the operator no longer has to assemble the picture by hand.
Work starts with a survey of the room and interviews with the future operators: which sources are needed at the same time, how many people are on shift, from what distance the text on the screen has to be readable. Those answers drive the size and resolution of the wall, its mounting height, the workstation layout and the lighting requirements. A mistake at this stage can only be fixed by rebuilding, which is why viewing angles and legibility are calculated before anything is ordered.
There is a further layer of work, the engineering preparation: power with redundancy, ventilation behind the wall, routes for signal cabling, a server room for the wall controller and the switching equipment. We design and install that part together with the audiovisual equipment, so that one contractor is accountable for the result.
What the system consists of
- Video wall built from narrow-bezel professional panels or projection cubes
- Wall controller supporting any number of sources and layouts
- Operator workstations with multi-monitor configurations
- Signal switching and control from a touch panel
- Video conferencing subsystem for links to external sites
- Sound reinforcement and the room microphone subsystem
- Servers, network equipment and uninterruptible power supplies
What the work covers
- Room survey, measurements, viewing angle and legibility calculations
- Design: block diagrams, layout plans, equipment schedule
- Supply of equipment and materials
- Installation of support structures, panels, cable routes and workstations
- Commissioning, calibration of the wall for brightness and colour temperature
- Layouts configured around how the duty shift actually works
- Operator training and handover of documentation
- Warranty and post-warranty support
