Digital signage: information and advertising displays
Digital signage starts not with screens but with the answer to one question: who will change the content, and how often. That answer decides the choice of management system and whether the project is still alive six months later.
The hardware is professional panels or video walls with media players. They differ from consumer televisions in their rating for long duty cycles, brightness headroom for spaces with shop-window light, portrait orientation and remote diagnostics: the system reports that a screen has gone dark before a visitor notices.
The software side handles the content. The management system stores material, assembles it into playlists, distributes it to groups of screens and plays it to a schedule: different content at different times of day and at different sites. Permissions are split, so a branch can change its own block without touching the shared one.
Placement follows the viewing scenario: at a reception desk people stand still and read detail, in a corridor they walk past and only take in a short message. Hence the different diagonals, mounting heights and amounts of text per frame.
